Amazon Teams with Hospitals and Start-Up Xealth to Improve Patient Compliance

One of hospitals’ primary challenges in improving health outcomes has always been overcoming the lack of patient compliance after discharge. For patients who lack reliable transportation, strong social supports, or in-home follow-up care, adhering to the prescribed regimen can be difficult.

Now, Amazon and healthcare start-up Xealth are partnering to make the recovery period easier to manage. They’ve announced their intent to launch a medical supplies delivery service through Amazon Prime.

Under the proposed service, doctors could “prescribe” medical supplies and/or supplements to patients at discharge. Amazon Prime would then deliver to them at a discount.

The thought is that automating delivery of medical supplies could make it easier for some patients to manage their own after-care. And patients would not necessarily need to have their own Prime memberships to participate, according to CNBC’s Christina Farr.

Several provider organizations, including University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Seattle’s Providence Health Systems, have already expressed interest in serving as testbeds for the project, Farr reported.
