Lack of staff preparedness, lack of appropriate supplies and equipment, unsuitability of the facility to handle the level of medical risk, and other potentially unsafe factors contributed to 260 deaths in stateside ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) since 2013, a joint report by Kaiser Health News and USA TODAY alleged. In many instances, the investigating journalists stated, patients might have survived had their surgeries been performed in a full-service hospital. Should regulators and payers be taking a more critical look at physician-owned ASCs?
