In another sign that the US healthcare industry may be moving away from its current, hospital-based model, the CEO of Indianapolis’s St. Vincent Health, Jonathan Nalli, has warned employees that “transformations” — which some suspect might be coded language for forthcoming cuts to staff and services — are looming on the horizon.
“We recognize for us to truly advance health care delivery, we needed to disrupt ourselves,” Nalli told the Indianapolis Business Journal.
With 15 hospitals and a reported 33,000 employees, St. Vincent Health is the second-largest healthcare provider in Indiana. Nalli’s remarks come on the heels of St. Vincent Health’s parent company, St. Louis-based Ascension, having announced that it will seek to drastically reduce costs.
Industry analysts expect Ascension to increasingly look to develop its telemedicine and outpatient services, and to continue to shed hospital and labor-associated overhead.
