On Tuesday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released an interim final rule adjusting the Medicare Shared Savings Program to take “extreme and uncontrollable circumstances” into account when assigning ACO quality scores for 2017. The rule affects ACOs which are either based in, or have more than 20 percent of their beneficiaries residing in, counties designated as “emergency declared areas” by the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the HHS.
