CMS Broadens Medicare Advantage Coverage

Recent updates to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ guidelines on Medicare Advantage plans could open up opportunities for retailers looking to enter the healthcare industry, such as Amazon and Walmart. “Under the new definition, the agency will allow supplemental benefits if they compensate for physical impairments, diminish the impact of injuries or health conditions, and/or reduce avoidable emergency room utilization,” CMS said in an official release. Broadening the reaches of “supplemental benefits” would allow Medicare to cover transportation, food, safety adaptations and a host of other goods and services to keep patients healthy and out of expensive hospital settings.
