On Wednesday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its forecast of the US’s spending on healthcare in 2018, predicting a sharp uptick (5.3% rise this year) relative to 2017. Contributing factors, CMS noted, are unchecked increases in medication costs, a shrinking pool of insured individuals post-rollback of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, and continued cost increases associated with caring for the aging Baby Boom generation.
