With well over 1.3 billion people, it’s the largest country in the world by population size and the fourth-largest by land area. Its middle class is steadily growing and the nation is rapidly urbanizing, creating robust consumer demand for elective healthcare services.

All that makes China an attractive growth market for US healthcare providers. According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, American hospitals and healthcare systems are increasingly exploring their potential for new ventures in China.

For example, executives from Toledo-based ProMedica, parent non-profit of Toledo Hospital and Toledo Children’s Hospital, recently returned from tours of hospitals in Shanghai, Chengdu and Shenzhen. They hoped to identify new growth opportunities to bolster falling stateside revenues, Melanie Evans reported.
