Could Price Transparency Potentially Be an Underappreciated Provider Incentive?

A study by Johns Hopkins researchers, published in April, 2018 in the peer-review journal The American Surgeon, found that ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) that published prices for common procedures increased their revenues, lending support to those who say healthcare price transparency will ultimately boost efficient utilization and stabilize prices.

The study’s authors examined 8 ASCs that listed prices for surgical services on their websites.

5 of 6 centers reported increases in patient volume, with an average 50% growth in patient volume in the year immediately following implementation.

4 of the ASCs studied experienced a 30% midrange revenue increase, according to HealthLeaders‘ Alexandra Wilson Pecci.

Several also noted that patient engagement and patient satisfaction seemed to increase following their price transparency rollouts.

Could health systems’ support for price transparency be used as recruitment tools or provider incentives? Maybe, if providers can see that their revenues would increase along with their patient share.
