Following through on specific direction it received from the General Assembly, in its FY 2018 budget, to seek ways to improve Delaware’s care delivery system for seriously and chronically ill children, the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) recently released its Plan for Managing the Health Care Needs of Children with Medical Complexity.
The plan was collaboratively developed by a steering committee comprised of care providers, payers, parents and state officials.
The committee recommended many improvements to Delaware’s extant care delivery system; among them, steps to reduce wait times to see specialists, streamlining of lab authorizations and forward planning for disabled children’s transition to adulthood care.
It also recommended that Delaware step up its efforts to educate physicians and families about the state’s many chronic disease management resources.
