In an interview with Enli Health Intelligence, Marilyn Tavenner, President and CEO of AHIP and former CMS Administrator, spoke about the future of healthcare in a value-based environment and the key factors driving the transformation. Here are some of the key takeaways:
On what is driving the shift toward focus on outcomes
“I’d say it’s probably data, frustration with the current system, and really poor quality results that led to kind of this, if you will, interest in changing the system.”
On the balance of public and private sector development
“We started with process measures, but what was going on behind the doors is, how do we move from process measures to coordinated care and then outcome-based approach?”
On provider fears in the face of changes coming to primary care
“We’ve been a very specialist-based society, so the idea that you are all of a sudden going to start to add codes and coordination of care to primary care – we had a lot of specialist pushback. And so if you look at some of the original demonstrations, it allowed hospital systems the ability to participate, it allowed managed care, it allowed large primary care groups . . . you’d let a thousand flowers bloom, and then you get around to four or five that actually push forward.”
On perceived holdups in value-based innovation
“There is a desire to move slower this time, and instead of looking at a three year process, it’s more of a four year process, a five year process, and you graduate into a risk component. But I think we are all moving toward risk, and we’re moving toward a primary care component that drives that risk.”
