Mayo Clinic CEO Decries Wasteful Middleman Spending in US Healthcare System

In his March 28 appearance on CNBC’s Morning Squawk, Mayo Clinic president and CEO John Noseworthy noted that, after speaking with Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett and Jamie Dimon’s highly-visible new health care venture, he expects that group to focus on cutting out unnecessary middlemen in our healthcare delivery system.

“They’re looking at this consolidation story, the whole health care [sic] vertical,” Noseworthy said. “How do you get from fact-based, data-driven answers and get that to patients — whether it’s safer drugs, safer diagnostics, imaging, new projects — how do you remove intermediary costs?”

Noseworthy stated that he believes direct-to-patient, value-based healthcare delivery represents a significant opportunity, although he acknowledged that the flip from fee-for-service, “is going to be a struggle.”
