America’s opioid crisis isn’t just an adult problem; children are being admitted to pediatric intensive care units for narcotic overdoses at an increasingly alarming rate, asserted the authors of a new study published this month in Pediatrics. Between 2004 and 2015, the number of children admitted to the ICU for opioid overdoses nearly doubled. Additionally, the number of US children showing evidence of opioid addiction is rising.
