Report: Rural Hospitals More Likely to Close if Owned by For-Profit Companies

New analysis from the United States Government Accountability Office has found that 64 rural hospitals – 3% of total rural hospitals in 2013 – closed between 2013 and 2017.

Of those, the majority (775) were located in the Southeast, and those owned by for-profit companies were most likely to close (36%), followed by non-profit (30%), government (20%) and other owners (14%).
