Shorten MIPS Reporting Period, Say US Physician Groups

On April 20, the American Medical Association (AMA), Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and 47 other medical professional organizations sent a letter to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator Seema Verma requesting that the agency walk back its new, year-long MIPS reporting requirements to its previous 90-day reporting period.

The change, the groups said, is necessary to reduce administrative burdens on physicians. They also cited a “lack of timely and direct notification by CMS on whether a physician is considered MIPS eligible,” and “a severe delay by CMS in updating the Quality Payment Program (QPP) interactive website with 2018 information,” as justifications for switching back.

The delayed updates to the QPP website were cited as particularly distressing to physicians, because CMS has ceased mailing letters detailing doctors’ MIPS eligibility, instead requiring them to check the website, which may or may not provide accurate information.
