A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association highlights significant barriers to patient health record access. Conducted by researchers at the Yale University School of Medicine, the cross-sectional study of 83 hospitals across 29 states found that “as few as 9 hospitals (11%) provided the option of selecting 1 of the categories of information and only 44 hospitals (53%) provided patients the option to acquire the entire medical record.” Further, 48 hospitals required payment to release patient records which was significantly higher than the federally-recommended cost of $6.50 for electronic records.
