A recent study published in the American Journal of Managed Care found that while enrollment in consumer-directed, high-deductible plans has risen dramatically over the past decade, these insurance models have done little to cut costs. Researchers found that few consumers are comparing costs and shopping around for providers that administer the best value despite being encouraged to do so. The research team tracked 26 low-value services from multiple sources and concluded that consumers were still paying for these services, even under consumer-directed plans that are intended to encourage value-based care choices.
