Survey: 20% of Older Adults Skipping Care Due to Costs

The 2018 Nationwide Health Care and Long-term Care Consumer Survey revealed some troubling trends in patient behavior among older adults.

Responses showed that 20% of respondents had skipped out on treatments, prescriptions, or other care necessities to cut costs, while a full 6 in 10 had taken some type of action to avoid costs of care. Further, more than half are concerned about not being able to afford unplanned health expenses in retirement.

As the cost of care continues to rise, unpacking the causes and implications is crucial to understanding the current state of the industry as value-based payment models become more prevalent.
