University of Iowa Health Care is the first US-based health system to adopt an FDA-cleared artificial intelligence diagnostic system to test for diabetic retinopathy. IDx-DR, produced by the privately-held IDx, is “the first autonomous AI diagnostic system cleared by the FDA”, meaning diagnostics can be handled by a wider range of physician specialists. The system was first implemented at the school’s UI Health Care – Iowa River Landing diabetes clinic, but its success will soon see the technology deployed system-wide.
