University of Utah Health Creates Resiliency Center to Address Physician Burnout

Physician engagement is a crucial factor in improving health outcomes. Physician burnout creates downward pressure on patient outcomes by negatively impacting the quality of care delivered on the ward. Now, some health systems are developing new ways to prevent physician burnout.

University of Utah Health (UUH), for example, last year expanded its Chief Wellness Officer’s role to include surveying the system’s providers to determine their sources of professional dissatisfaction. It worked with departments and with its medical school to develop a stable of “wellness champions” within its ranks.

The hospital organization also created a Resiliency Center, which coordinates the system’s various wellness programs and gathers information, on a continual basis, about the factors that satisfy or dissatisfy its providers.

This year, UUH opened its professional satisfaction efforts to include faculty and staff across all levels of its system.
